Kasol Tourism : An overview

Kasol, nested in the lush valleys of Himachal Predesh, is a quaint village that promises an escape into the arms of the nature. Kasol is also called as the little Israel of India.

It’s often considered a perfect haven for nature lovers, travel enthusiasts, and adventurous souls as it boasts majestic Himalayas, breathtaking mountain views, and vibrant green landscapes.

Kasol is a popular Himalayan destination for backpackers and serves as a starting point for treks to nearby locations like Malana and Kheerganga. It is known as the Mini Israel of India because of the large number of Israeli tourists visiting the area.

Kasol enjoys pleasant weather for much of the year and experiences moderate snowfall from late December to February.

Let’s dig into how Kasol promises an unforgettable getaway for travel junkies and why this Himalayan village should be your next trip.

How to reach Kasol

Getting to Kasol is quite easy because of it’s good connectivity from various North Indian cities. Although Kullu Manali airport (Bhuntar airport) is near Kasol, most people avoid flying due to the limited number of flights and high airfares.

There is no major railway station near Kasol in Himachal Pradesh; the closest one is in Chandigarh.

Reaching Kasol by car

We will begin by explaining how to reach Kasol by car, assuming Delhi as the starting point.

The route from Delhi to Kasol is as follows:

Delhi – Karnal – Ambala – Chandigarh – Bilaspur – Sundernagar – Mandi – Aut – Bhuntar – Kasol

This journey covers approximately 520 kilometers and takes around 12 to 14 hours. From Delhi, you’ll follow NH1 until you reach Chandigarh, then take the road towards Kiratpur Sahib via Rupnagar. After Mandi, the drive becomes pleasant. You’ll pass through Mandi, Sundernagar, and the Aut Tunnel before reaching Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, leave the Manali highway and take the road to Kasol, which is about 30 kilometers away.

Reacing Kasol by bus

Most travelers heading to Kasol typically start their journey from Delhi or Chandigarh. There are numerous HRTC, HPTDC, and private Volvo buses traveling to Manali from these cities, both overnight and throughout the day. Manali, being one of the most popular hill stations in India, sees a constant flow of tourists, and buses regularly depart from nearby cities.

You can simply choose any of these buses, but in our opinion, an overnight bus is the best option. However, make sure not to travel all the way to Manali, you should get off at Bhuntar.

From Bhuntar, the road splits towards Parvati Valley. Once you arrive at Bhuntar Bus Stand, you can catch any bus heading to Manikaran and deboard at Kasol.

The first bus departs at 7 AM from Bhuntar, and then buses run every hour thereafter.

Local buses are affordable and operate throughout the day at regular intervals. There are also a few HRTC buses from Kashmere Gate in Delhi that travel all the way to Manikaran (Kasol is en route to Manikaran). You can inquire at the ticket counter to see if there’s one available, and if so, board it.

Reaching Kasol by Train

The closest railway station to Kasol is in Joginder Nagar, located 125 kilometers away. However, this station has a narrow-gauge track and is connected to Pathankot via a toy train (similar to the Shimla-Kalka toy train). A more convenient option is the major railway station in Chandigarh, which is better connected and offers easier access. Trains to Chandigarh are readily available, as it is well-linked by rail to major cities across India.

After you have reached either Joginder Nagar or Chandigarh by train, you will have to travel to Kasol by taxi or by bus.

Reaching Kasol by Flight

The closest airport to Kasol is in Bhuntar, also known as Kullu Manali Airport (Bhuntar Airport). The airport at Bhuntar is 40 kilometer away from Kasol.

However, flights to this airport are limited and frequently canceled, making it a more expensive option. Therefore, a more practical choice is to book a flight to Chandigarh and then travel to Kasol from there.

That said, flying to Bhuntar is still an option. If you’re short on time and a flight is available, you can fly to Bhuntar and then take a taxi directly from the airport to Kasol.
